Just a little dog walking advice

Just a little tip many of us walk our dog on a leash with a collar but few of us ever think what would happen if the collar slipped off. Maybe our loyal pet would stay right by our side but then again maybe not. What if an animal came out and he ran after it. You just never know. Micro chips are great but they only work if the shelter or vet that your dog is taken to has the right machine to view that chip. I'm not saying not to get your dog micro chipped I highly recommend it but I also recommend something most of us never think about.

Something so simple... a second collar, yup a second collar. This second collar can be a inexpensive collar nothing fancy just something to put a back up tag on. Then if he happens to slip off out of his collar weather on a walk or tied out in the yard he has all the information that he needs to be returned home safely. I hope that your best friend never gets away from you but if he does i hope he is returned quickly and safely.

What makes it Organic - Organic and Vegan dog treats

What makes dog treats and food organic? Dog treats and food are regulated by the USDA as well as the state in which they are produced and in order to be organic the treats must first pass inspection and been processed according to USDA standards.  There are a specific set of rules and regulations that govern these treats.

As stated by the USDA “ Organic is a labeling term that indicates that the food has been produced through approved methods. These methods integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that promote ecological balance. You may not use sewage, irradiation, genetic engineering or synthetic fertilizer.”

The label “100% organic “is used to describe treats that contain only organically produced ingredients with the exception of water and salt. Products sold as “organic” must have at least 95 % certified organic content the remaining of the ingredients must be approved ingredients that are non-agricultural and approved by the USDA. Treats or food containing less may be sold under the labeling “ made with organic ingredients “but these treat or food must contain at least 70% organic ingredients,  so it is important for dog owners to read carefully the wording of the labels so that they know for sure what they are receiving

Annual inspections of the operation are preformed and any changes in recipes must be in compliance with the regulations and the recipe changes must be submitted for review. Organic treats are more heavily regulated and are much better for you dog.

A few great Organic Dog Treat Recipes

Peanut butter treats

Things You'll Need

• 1 ½ cups water
• ¼ cup vegetable oil
• ¼ cup organic applesauce
• 2 organic eggs
• 2 tsp vanilla
• 1/3 cup organic peanut butter, crunchy or smooth
• 2 ½ cups organic whole wheat flour
• ¾ cup organic white flour
• 1 cup organic cornmeal
• ¾ cup organic oats

Instructions

·         Preheat oven to 350 degrees

·         Mix the water, oil, apple sauce, eggs, vanilla, and peanut butter together in a mixer with a paddle

·         Slowly add the dry ingredients mix until a smooth dough is formed

·         Roll out on a floured surface to ½ inch thick, cut with cookie cutters, lay on cookie sheet

·         Bake in oven 20 minutes or until crisp.

Bacon Flavored treats

Things You'll Need

• 2 organic eggs
• 1 cup organic milk
• 1/2 cup water
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 10 tablespoons bacon fat, melted from organic bacon
• 5 cups organic whole wheat flour

Instructions

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
• Beat eggs in a large bowl. Stir in milk, water, salt, and bacon fat until well blended. Gradually stir in flour to make a stiff dough. Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll into 2 inch balls. Place on prepared baking sheet.
• Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes.

Beef treats

Things You’ll need

• 2 1/2 cups organic whole wheat flour
• 3/4 cup organic nonfat dry milk powder
• 1 organic egg
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
• 2 cubes organic beef bouillon cube
• 3/4 cup boiling water

Instructions

• Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Lightly grease one cookie sheet.
• Dissolve bouillon cubes in boiling water and allow to cool.
• Combine the flour, dry milk, egg, oil, beef broth and brown sugar. Mix well and knead dough for 1 minute.
• On a floured surface roll out dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out bones and place on cookie sheet.
• Bake for 30 minutes and allow to cool.
